I was approached by my client through my Houzz profile in January this year. He had purchased a new apartment a year ago for his family to relocate back to Australia after 13 years as expats in Singapore. The apartment was purchased brand new and was a blank canvas for decorating/design. It had been completed by the builder with a standard white kitchen, there were two bathrooms and three bedrooms with built in robes and a fairly large balcony. I presented J&L with some ideas for how the apartment could look and based on their feedback I set about designing their apartment to suit them. They wanted lots of storage, a huge tv, beds with trundles for the kids, dining for 8 and more kitchen bench space. Also very important was a feeling of home. The apartment was very bare bones and really needed some layering. I managed their project with my wonderful Cabinet Maker, Robert Murdocca from InVogue kitchens. The entire wall of storage and banquette, kitchen extension in the living room and the kids desks and master bedroom feature wall were all done by Robert. The clients wanted a modern beachside feel to go with the existing oak floors. We added some black to give it a bit of punch and selected a whole new house lot of furniture. As they were relocating from overseas, it was a much easier exercise to start afresh. It also gave us the opportunity to really work out a cohesive design and have all our colours flow from room to room. It’s essentially a neutral base with greys, black, oak, white and then a few pops of blue, aqua and purple in the kids rooms. I think we achieved the brief and delivered a home with style and storage and a homely feel.
